Passwords rule our daily lives. At work and at home.
They can be a bit of a headache, because making them easy to remember and ensuring they’re still secure is an incredibly difficult task.
We have more and more online accounts and the need for different and safe passwords is greater than ever.
For many of us, this is too much of a headache.
So what do we do about it?
We create passwords that we can easily remember that are often leaving us exposed online. Or worse still, we use the same password for each account.
When attempting to create a secure and safe password, one of the most common mistakes people make is substituting obvious numbers for letters, like 0 for o and 1 for l. Passwords do require a mix, but it needs to be the right mix and sometimes it isn’t always necessary.
As mentioned in a previous blog post, for passwords to be effective and secure, we need to remember them or have a means to remember them. Password managers can certainly help you control the strength and access to certain passwords.
Most business level password managers will allow sharing of logins in a secure environment with permission set for varying levels of access. For example, the accounts team will be logging into services that the marketing team will never need to use.
The two biggest problems are reusing the same password on multiple sites, or using easy to guess passwords.
Educate the workforce on how to construct unique passwords from phrases or statements they are already familiar with. Make them aware of how important password security is.
This could be a famous phrase from a landmark speech or a famous film.
‘I have a dream that one day’
‘Frankly my dear I don’t give’
Examples are ‘bobandjane’ or ‘mysecretgarden’
Your favourite technology or possessions could be items you can include. An example that we have created could be ‘pneohtisveleoni’ providing a password consisting of ‘phone’ and ‘television’.
So when each month and year passes, you can alter the password accordingly.
